Earthquake shakes Southern Spain

An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale has shaken various parts of Southern Spain. The Provinces of Jaen, Granada and Cordoba were all affected.

The epicenter was reported to be in Quesada in Jaen just after 3.30pm yesterday afternoon. There have been no reports of damage or loss of life

World Tourism numbers increased throughout 2011

A study just published has shown that World Tourism figures increased throughout 2011 - despite the global economic recession. There were close to one billion tourists in 2011.

International tourist arrivals grew by 4.4 percent to 980 million in 2011, up from 940 million in 2010, the Madrid-based United Nations World Tourism Organization said in its annual survey. Tourism figures recovered slightly from 2009 - the worst year for 60yrs

The 2011 figure was within the body's 4.0-5.0 percent forecast. For 2012, the UN is forecasting international tourism will grow further but at a slower rate, than that shown in the last few years. We are expected to reach the historic one billion mark by year end.

The European continent experienced an extra 29 million visitors and giving a total of 503 million. Six percent higher than 2010, reflecting the sharpest rise of all the regions.

But Africa, with 50 million visitors overall, logged no growth in tourist arrivals in 2011 after posting gains of 6.0 percent in the previous year. The Arab spring protests, unrest in Libya, Eygpt and Tunsia all account for the overall loss. Asia saw a decrease, with 6% in 2011 compared with the 13% in 2010. The tsunami that struck Japan in March and the consequent nuclear alert.

2011 was the hottest year in Spain since records began

All end of year figures are pointing to Spain having the hottest years on record since records began in 1961.

Although the exact figures haven't been published yet, the yearly average temperature across Spain for 2011 has been 16.7 degrees Centigrade, 0.3 degrees above the previous hottest year of 2006.

The average temperatures have been almost 1.5 degrees hotter than normal. Leading to the National meteorological agency to refer to 2011 as "very hot to extremely hot" for nearly all of Spain.

Somewhat surprisingly the hottest land temperature recorded was 42.5C degrees in Moron de la Frontera, Sevilla on August 19th. Having lived in Southern Spain for a number of years, temperatures have felt higher every year.....and 42.5C degrees as a record temperature just doesn't sound that high any more!!

2011 was also drier than normal with 7% less rainfall than predicted.

The coldest recorded temperature was on January 23 in Molina de Aragón, Guadalajara when thermostats dropped to -13.6 degrees centigrade

Spanish King's son to face court

It has just been announced that King Juan Carlos's son-in-law, Inaki Urdangarin is appear in court on corruption charges. He has been summoned to appear before a judge on February 6 in Palma de Majorca. The announcement has taken the case to a new level. Inaki is going to be formally charged with fraud.

The case has been front page across Spain for the last few weeks. With many ordinary Spaniards expressing their disbelief and anger that even the Spanish Royal family can be involved in corruption when so many Spaniards are facing economic hardship. The Royal family, partly in response to the public reaction has published for the first time, the income levels for each member of the Royal family. But it seems to have done little to quash the public anger.

Spain's most famous bull to go travelling

Probably the most iconic symbol in Spanish marketing history - the Osbourne Bull - is set to go overseas.

Without a doubt one of the most memorable sights when travelling in Spain is the huge black bull that overlooks the surrounding landscape.

Now found on 94 roads across Spain. They were almost pulled down in the 1990s, with road safety advocates insisting that the 14 metre bulls are too big a distraction for passing motorists.

Until recently the only place outside of the Spanish mainland to have an Osbourne bull was the Spanish enclave of Melilla. The bull was situated on a hill side overlooking Morocco - leading to no end of protests and official complaints.

Now the Osbourne group is set to cash on the International demand for the bull. So far requests from Copenhagen and Texas are being considered.

Although the Osbourne group was founded by English man, the Exeter wine importer Thomas Osbourne in 1772, there have so far been no requests for bull in the UK.

Moraira at Christmas

The Spanish Christmas is not the long drawn-out commercial event that we are used to in the UK. The initial festive stirrings commence at the end of November or the beginning of December.

Being a predominantly Catholic country, the Spaniards do not lose sight of the religious side of the festivities and every home (and many business premises) features a Belèn – an elaborate nativity scene; in Javea the Belèn is a particularly large work of art featuring a more general biblical scene, including smoking camp fires and all sorts of other features, the entire scene must measure around 40 x 20 metres, and fully merits a 10-15 minute viewing. During December the main streets of all towns and villages are festooned with lights displaying all the usual yuletide motifs.

Most homes and many businesses feature Christmas trees and decorations; Christmas cards have become widely available, whereas they were not seen, just twenty years ago! We can remember that ten years ago it was almost impossible to guarantee the availability of a Christmas turkey or the ubiquitous brussel sprouts; thanks to the growing cosmopolitan community, we can rely on supplementing such seasonal delights with locally purchased cranberry sauce, brandy butter etc. A chronology of seasonal events is broadly as follows:

8^th December: The first public holiday and the beginning of the festivities are known as the ‘Inmaculada’- the Feast of the Immaculate Conception which is a national holiday.

22^nd December: ‘El Gordo’ (the Fat One) relates to the largest lottery draw of the year with three huge prizes and thousands of smaller ones, the tickets being bought, and the proceeds shared, between villages, business employees and other communities. This amounts to an entire mornings viewing on national T.V. where the selected numbers are sung out by children’s’ choirs.

24^th December: ‘Noche Buena’ (The Good Night – Christmas Eve, as we know it). This is very much a family affair and the main feast of Christmas with most restaurants and bars being closed for the evening. Locally, within the Valencian region, the focus of the meal is seafood with a vast variety of prawns, langoustine and crayfish, washed down with a selection of local wines and followed by the special, local sweet of ‘Turrón’ which is a almond and honey based confection of Arab origin.

25^th December: Not an official part of Christmas for the Spanish, but still a national holiday reserved for recovery or for visiting friends and family; usually celebrated with a large meal with family or friends at lunchtime, either at home or in a local restaurant. Locally, in Moraira, hundreds of us congregate at the neighbouring bay of El Portet, some in fancy dress – usually as Santo, of course – for a communal pre-lunch cava and tapas party; this is held on the waterfront, with a number of hardy souls combining this with a swim! Thanks to the broader European influence, Spanish children now expect presents of some kind on this day.

28^th December: ‘Santos Inocentes’ (Holy Innocents). This is Spain’s equivalent of the UK’s April Fool’s Day. A day of jokes and trickery which is also embraced by the national media with their contribution of spoof news events.

31^st December: ‘Noche Vieja’ (The Old Night). New Year’s Eve is celebrated in the near universal manner, traditionally with the eating of twelve lucky grapes as the clock strikes at midnight, one grape for each strike of the clock, and washed down with the obligatory cava!

1^st January: A public holiday of rest and recuperation.

5^th January: The evening heralds in the following day’s Feast of the Epiphany. There are major processions staged across the whole of Spain in celebration of the arrival of the Three Kings - ‘Los Reyes Magos’. In Moraira, the arrival of the Three Kings is re-enacted on the beach, together with a stable, and a procession accompanied by a group of camels or other exotic animals and the random distribution of sweets thrown from the floats by the kings to children and other onlookers. The procession terminates at a life size nativity scene, staged within the plaza adjoining the church which features a local baby as Jesus. From an adjacent stage, outside the church, the Three Kings distribute presents to the children of the town.

6^th January: Feast of the Epiphany. The big event of the year for local children who awake to find their main presents of the event! Traditionally a special cake called a ‘Roscón’ is shared between the family which contains a bean and a small figurine. The figurine brings the finder good luck, whilst the finder of the bean is expected to pay for the cake!

New Gibraltar airport to be built.....in Spain

Despite the highly publicised problems between Gibraltar and La Linea, it has just been reported that the new airport is going to be built on the Spanish side of the border. A surprising statement to say the least.

The extensive of the airport has been on the cards for the long time. The current situation is unmanageable to say the least.

It is not entirely clear how the airport is going to be managed and controlled. In theory, it should serve both communities, the reality remains to be seen.

The land that has been earmarked for the project is a former military base. A three storey airport covering some 2,000m2, with parking for up to four hundred cars, will make the new terminal.

More news is expected to follow shortly.

Colour coded cars to be introduced in Spanish cities

In a new proposal that is set to approved this week - all cars in Spain are to be colour coded as part of a new National Air Quality Plan. Cars are to be coded red, orange and green depending on age and efficiency.

Larger cities are already being zoned. The exact details of the plans have not been finalised and/or publicised - but it is widely believed that the cars will be restricted within certain parts of the cities.

Cars that pollute heavily, red coloured cars, may have to pay a tax or charge to gain access during certain times of the day.

Bank manager arrested for trying to rob his own bank

A bank manager in Spain's Basque country - along with his brother-in-law - has been arrested for trying to rob his own bank. The plan was doomed to failure from the start.

The brother-in-law was to be the would-be 'bank robber.' He was seen by several pedestrians putting on his disguise in a car parked next to the bank. The disguise included a fake nose, teeth, wig and a beard. They subsequently called the police.

The police took no time in locating the abandoned car and finding the disguise. The car was registered to the bank manager.

They devised the plan to ease some of the financial pressure they found themselves under.

To store or not to store?

Not an easy question and one that has a great many people wondering what on Earth to do with their 'accumulated' holiday possessions. You know the scene, you spend a summer in your Spanish holiday home and continually collect things....the beach chairs, the bat and ball, the terrace furniture, the millions of little things that seem important in the moment.

When coming to the end of your holiday, you have no idea what to do with all these possessions. This is of particular importance if your holiday home is used for lettings. Most people have possessions that they do not want to be used by renters.

Southern Spain and in Malaga in particular, this was a big problem. The lack of space within most people's holiday homes meant that safe storage was a very real problem. Until very recently, there were no viable options, you left as much stuff as you could with neighbours/friends...basically anyone who has willing to store your possessions for free. International film festival Marbella - October 14 to 16

Skiing is a sport that is not often associated with Spain, let alone the Spanish. But the Spanish are flocking to skiing and all its joys in their droves.

Every year skiing is gaining in popularity among the Spanish. Gone are the days where renting a rural property over the Christmas holidays or the 'Semana Santa' would be the norm, now more and more people are taking to the mountains. And who can blame them?

The Spanish are also travelling further afield for their all inclusive ski holidays. France is a popular destination, as is Andorra, ski travel is something that is here to stay and will no doubt keep gaining in popularity.

Air pollution in Spanish cities described as 'alarming'

The air quality in several large Spanish cities has been described as 'terrible' and 'alarming.' Unsurprisingly Madrid and Barcelona were both singled out in the report by the Natural gas foundation Fenosa.

All fingers are pointed at the rising amount of traffic pollution, with the head of Fenosa, Pedro Fábregas, going as far as to say, there were 'no miracle solutions' and the problem appears to be getting worse, rather then better.

Speaking at a Fenosa sponsored conference in Salamanca entitled "the Quality of Urban Air" Pedro put most of the blame on the increased use of diesel fuels and didn't see any viable solution to the current situation. Predicting that it would get a lot worse before we see any improvements.

Berlin and Copenhagen were held up as example cities to emulate. Public transportation needs to be improved, car sharing schemes adopted, but most importantly people need to be aware of the consequences and be encouraged to adopt 'greener' forms of transport.

British space robot being tested in Tenerife

Not for the first time is the landscape of Tenerife, the largest of Spain's Canary Islands, is being compared to the moon. This time, however, there is a ring of 'officialness' to it.

A robotic rover designed by the UK company Astrium is being tested in tested in Tenerife - ahead of its voyage to the Moon or Mars.

The rover is named ‘Bridget’ and is currently undergoing tests in the Sierra de Teide National Park - pictured above - although the tests have not been publicly announced, it is widely believed they are a advanced testing ground for European Space Agency’s ExoMars mission.

Bridget is being used on this occasion to test cameras and image processing software.

Robert Parker the World's leading wine critic has given a Ronda produced wine a rating of 92 (up from last year's 91). The 1995 vintage was labelled as 'outstanding,' a label that is not used lightly.

It was described "described as ‘amazing in colour, very inventive, with a lot of body,’ by Parker's team.

The wine is made from a blend of grapes. Tempranillo grapes make up the bulk of the wine comprising 55%, 25% are cabernet sauvignon, and the remaining 20% is a mixture of Syrah and Merlot.

A mafia Facebook photo blunder

Now there's a headline and one that could only be made up. Surprisingly not! A Facebook photo that was innocently put up on a woman's profile, has lead to the arrest of one of the Italian mafia's most feared and most wanted mafia members.

This photo was posted on Brada Hint's Facebook profile. The heavily pregnant Breda, 31, is shown standing in front of the upmarket Nikki Beach restaurant in Marbella. Detectives monitoring her movements, didn't have too many problems identifying the location and quickly moving in for the arrest.

Salvatore D’Avino, 39 has been on the run for more than 10 years. Much of which he is thought to have been in hiding in Morocco.

Salvatore couldn't believe it when police showed up to arrest him. He now faces up to 20 years behind bars.

Spanish Revolution - Democracia Real Ya! – Real Democracy Now

Spanish Revolution - happening in your local Plaza right now...

A few days prior to the recent local elections in Spain, a group of people got together in the main plaza in Madrid to protest political corruption, government and banking policies. The majority were young Spaniards, 45% of which will probably never have employment, despite their hard-earned University degrees. Current unemployment in Spain generally stands at 21.29%.

Most of these people got together through the popular social network, Facebook, and continue to connect and share on that medium.

While the socialist PSOE party lost their standing in local elections in virtually all ayuntamientos (municipalities), the people believe that the conservative PP (Partido Popular), who won the majority, are not much better than the PSOE in their methods and general running of the “system”, and demand a “real democracy”. The people believe that the “crisis” was invented by the banks and the politicians, and that it is not a true crisis, or recession.

Because of this, the movement has now spread to all major cities in the country and continues even today - both young and old are now involved. 10’s of 1000’s of people are camping out in the major Plazas (or town squares) of major cities, day and night. Smaller towns are also forming groups to protest for a real Democracy.

The “indignados” as they are called are also performing various individual social protests, for instance preventing evictions in Madrid. So many people can no longer afford their mortgages, due to unemployment, and if the indignados hear of a potential eviction, they “flashmob” the site to prevent it.

Other examples are the exposure of the salary increases in certain municipalities – most particularly Fuengirola, where the PP Mayoress gave her immediate staff 30-50% increases after the elections, on top of their already large salary packages… this in a time of crisis! The indignados of “Fuengirola Despierta” (Fuengirola Awakens), are actively informing the local public of these outrageous increases.

Other countries in Europe (Greece, England, Ireland, Croatia, Romania) have been inspired to follow Spain's lead and start their own protests, or to lend their support to Spain. Groups of Spaniards in many countries worldwide have lead protests in the major cities of those countries, including the Austria, Germany and Holland. Chile, Canada, USA and many other countries are also partaking in what is now becoming a World Revolution.

Protests in Spain are completely peaceful. The only violence in Spain has been at the hands of the Police (Mossos d'Esquadra), who were told to clear the Plaza de Catalunya in Barcelona for people to view a major football match between Manchester United and Barca on the 28th May. They used extreme, excessive force with batons, against peaceful protesters. Videos on youtube show the police in their body armour and helmets brutally beating women and men. Once the game was over, the protesters returned and camped again. Similar attacks were experienced by the movement in Valencia.

If anything, the violence has increased the number of protesters in the town squares. The protesters clean the plazas around themselves and do not leave litter in the streets. Their actions are completely legal under Spanish Law with regard to “freedom of speech”.

While the camps are now pretty much cleared from the plazas, regular marches and concentrations continue in all cities.

62% of Spanish population is connected to the internet

The internet. The internet is everywhere. Every country in the World has some way to get high speed internet access. Granted it may be slightly more complicated in some areas than others. But the fact remains that the internet connections are exploding across the World.

Nowhere is this 'explosion' more visible than in Spain. A country that has seen so many changes over the last couple of decades, that it is almost indescribable. Coming from under Franco's rule, where the country was one of the most insular countries in Europe. To em brassing capitalism and all that goes with it - to emerge as one of the forward thinking dynamic countries in Europe. According to figures published by the World Bank only 7% of Spain's population was connected to the internet in 1999 - fast forward ten years and a staggering 62% is now connected.

Amazing by anyone's standards. But even more so in the context of Spain's modern history. It was only in 1994 - that numbers were significant enough to record (0.3% of Spain's population connected). Web design Spain is now something that is on everyone's minds. Never before has there been so much demand for anything remotely internet related & its a demand that is sure to stay....

A priceless manuscript - the Codex Calixtinus - has been stolen from a locked vault from within a Cathedral in Spain's Santiago de Compostela. Believed by many to be the first travel guide in history, it details the route of Saint James pilgrimage.

The rare manuscript is almost never taken out of the vault. The last time was during Pope Benedict XVI's visit last November to the city. There are only three people who has access to the vault. San Sebastián has won the European Cultural Capital Award for 2011. It shares the prestigious honour with the Polish city of Wroclaw. The other Spanish finalists included Cordoba, Burgos, Las Palmas, Segovia and Zaragoza.

The choice was made by a commission from the Ministry of Culture. They stated 'that San Sebastián had undertaken great efforts to overcome its history of violence through culture.'

The meat from the Iberian pig has been prized for many years in Spain. There has been an annual Iberian pig market in Plasencia on St Andrew’s day (November 30^th) since the 16^th century.

The best ham is considered to come from the ‘pata negra’ ,the black footed pig. It is a semi domesticated black pig which over the years has adapted to the harsh climate of the Spanish southwest.

The pigs range over the ‘Dehesa’ (pasture) which lies mainly in Extremadura but also extends to parts of Castile and Northern Andalucia. The Dehesa is characterised by a light forestation of stone oak and cork trees (less than 15 trees per acre). It is a delicately balanced ecosystem which also provides a habitat for birds migrating from Africa (eg flamingos and storks) as well as 55 other animal species under threat of extinction.

Now that the Iberian ham has become a luxury product it has become more profitable for local farmers to maintain this delicate ecosystem.

The pigs feeds on herbs, grasses, roots and sometimes olives but in the autumn they feed on the acorns from the cork oak and stone oak, gaining about 60 to 80 kilos within a few months. It is this which gives the meat its distinctive flavour.

After slaughter the meat is salted for up to 14 days in a cool room, washed and then hung for 30 to 60 days to allow the salt to permeate the ham. Afterwards the hams are moved to ventilated sheds and hung in cool mountain air until they have ‘sweated’ out about a third of their weight. The hams are then moved to cool storage cellars for another 14 months after which they are tested for maturity. Some hams can be matured for up to 24/30 months so it is small wonder that they are highly prized throughout the world.

Fresh Iberian pork is also available in many butchers and supermarkets and its flavour is very superior to the normal intensively reared pork.

The major event of the year in Spain for many Spanish and lots of foreigners is the popular San Fermin celebration. Every 6th of July the famous “chupinazo” alerts all the visitors that the party has started. All this happen in the middle of the town hall square plenty of people in their white clothes and red scarf.

The city of Pamplona offers numerous activities and shows during these days, but it is the bull running the greatest event of the week for all the visitors and locals in Pamplona. The famous “encierros” is the tour where 6 bulls run the streets of the old town every day at eight in the morning.

El Encierro:

This is carried out since July the 7th, Pamplona´s biggest day (San Fermin), until July the 14th. The approximate time of the race is between 2 or 3 minutes, even this time is not a standard to meet. Each “encierro” is different to the others, taking 2 minutes or even 7.

If we go back in the past, six bulls were running the streets directly to the Bull Ring (on the other end of the town) to be ready for the afternoon´s bull fighting, as there were no trucks that could easily transport the bull to the Arena.

This fact was encouraging people year after year to run with the bulls, for a bit of thrill and risk. Over the time the number of runners has grown to become the spectacle it is today.

Two of the most Spanish folk traditions worldwide known are Flamenco and Bullfightings.

Today the opposition to bullfights is more than ever. If the idea is to change a centuries-old tradition like bullfightings and start going to Mc Donalds every Friday evening instead, I think that we lose more than we get (anyway in both cases you end up paying for killing same kind of animals).

However, every time I hear “no to bullfightings” I think it would be such a shame that it would be forbidden. It is a tradition, people like it or not, and it has been and still is one more component in the Spanish culture which has influenced in different fields like art, everyday language and many other facets.

"We are pleased to renew the tourist cooperation agreement with the city of Madrid with the aim of increasing tourism between both markets throughout 2010," said Fred Dixon (vice president of the New York entity) in a statement on Tuesday.
